The Value of Inclusive Employment: Eddie's Impact at DSHS

In 2017, Eddie walked into the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) for a job interview, dressed sharply in a collared shirt and tie. Nate, his hiring supervisor, remembers the day clearly.

“Eddie’s professionalism and enthusiasm stood out immediately,” Nate said. “We knew he would be a great fit.”

Over the years, Eddie has proven himself an integral part of the team, demonstrating the profound value employment programs bring to workplaces.

A Balance of Professional and Personable

Eddie’s warm, engaging personality has left a lasting impression on everyone at DSHS.

“He’s got this infectious laugh and a sense of humor that brings the team closer together,” Nate said. Eddie greets everyone with a smile and a cheerful “hello,” striking a balance between being personable and professional.

What truly sets Eddie apart is his impeccable style and dedication to professionalism.

“Eddie is one of the most professionally dressed employees I’ve had the pleasure of working with,” Nate noted. “He shows up every day dressed to impress.”

Eddie’s positivity creates an environment where people feel connected and valued, fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes inclusivity and respect.

Going Above and Beyond

In his first few months of employment, Nate and Eddie worked closely to identify projects and tasks he would take on. Nate said, “Eddie was always included in assessing his job duties. We worked together to ensure his success and found solutions to challenges.”

Eddie’s commitment to his work is unparalleled. From his first day, he’s taken every challenge in stride, mastering tasks like email correspondence, managing calendars, and participating in virtual meetings during the pandemic.

“When COVID hit, Eddie adapted like the rest of us,” Nate shared. “He showed up on Teams, dressed just as professionally as if he were in the office. He didn’t miss a beat.” Now that he’s back in the office, Eddie has grown more efficient with the skills he learned before and during COVID-19.

Eddie’s attention to detail and dedication go beyond his job description. Often, he arrives early to tidy up the office, even though it’s not part of his official duties.

“I told him, ‘Eddie, you don’t have to do this,’ but he’d just smile and say, ‘It needs to be done,’” Nate recalled. Eddie’s willingness to go above and beyond has earned the admiration of his coworkers, culminating in him becoming DSHS’s first-ever Employee of the Month in January 2024.

Fostering an Environment of Opportunity and Inclusion

Reflecting on his experience working with Eddie, Nate encourages other companies to consider hiring individuals with disabilities.

“Eddie brings so much to the table—his work ethic, his positivity, and his ability to engage with people are invaluable,” Nate said. “He sets a standard for everyone else.”

Nate also highlighted the collaborative effort involved in ensuring Eddie’s success. Whether it’s working with job coaches or finding creative solutions to challenges, the process fosters a deeper sense of teamwork.

“When Eddie’s not in the office, you can feel the difference,” Nate added. “His presence is uplifting, and he reminds us of what’s important—dedication, kindness, and doing your best every day.”

Nate’s final piece of advice to employers is simple: “Don’t underestimate the impact of hiring someone through supported employment. Eddie has not only grown and thrived here but he’s also made us better as a team.”
